About Us
We are the nunn family!
We are the Nunn Family – JR, Summer, Sawyer, and Charleston. We are southern to the core so we will try to make this long story, short.
JR and I grew up in rural Richmond County, NC before we both went off to college. We are divided household where JR graduated from NC State with a Computer Science degree and I graduated with a Business degree from UNC. Needless to say one of us has enjoyed sports more than the other during the entire relationship.
We met the summer between my junior and senior year at a Pig Pickin back home. Needless to say even though JR moved to Columbus, GA which was 7 hours away from Chapel Hill; somehow he still managed to come up about every other weekend. Post college I moved to Atlanta, Georgia to work as an Investment Banking Analyst. After we got engaged JR joined me there continuing to work as a developer. Fun detail is we got engaged in Cinderella’s Castle in 2007 at dinner. We are huge Disney fans and both of our kids have been a few times already! We got married in 2008 in Wagram, NC at Cypress Bend Vineyard close to where we grew up. The ceremony was on riverbend deep in a grove of trees that is the winery's namesake. It was magical. Our relationship is built on a love of the outdoors and our roots in NC, so after 4 years in Atlanta we moved to Charlotte. While in Atlanta we took advantage of the amazing food scene and gained a deeper love of food.
We have been in Charlotte for 11 years now. JR has been with Duke Energy and is now a Sr IT Manager. I switched careers and spent 6 years working at Red Ventures learning the digital marketing side of business post banking world. After that I spent almost 6 years working at Driven Brands, climbing my way up to CMO. During COVID I found myself cut and luckily landed with an amazing company called Payzer helping them grow their software and business now.
During our time in Charlotte we rented in Ballantyne and South Park. We then built a home in Pineville and loved our 6 years in that house. We raised our babies there, Sawyer was only 11 months when we moved in 2013 and Charleston was born in 2017. We loved our old neighborhood and made great friends; however, there was a desire to either fully embrace in city living or get more space for our family to feel grounded. After searching for quite some time, we realized that we wanted more space for us to be outdoors and provide a home where our children have the ability to learn and grow up like we did in rural NC.
In November 2019 we moved to the Steele Creek area of Charlotte where we own around 9.5 acres. As COVID hit we had this desire to improve the land and property and at the same time become more sustainable and closer to our food. We started with a small garden and then got baby chicks. Baby chicks led to a chicken coop and eggs. Overgrown wooded areas led to 2 goats that lead to 2 more. Finally we fell in love with KuneKune Pigs and this is we ended up coming full circle since it all started at a Pig Pickin.
So we stumble into being a Semi-Homestead or either it naturally pulled us. This will be the place we share accomplishments and learnings (including failures) as we work to understand our food better and improve our houses and land. We are normal people with 2 corporate jobs and 2 kids trying to live better and simpler in the crazy, busy world. That means small farming but it also means leveraging technology and local advantages to make life happier!
As always – keep learning and growing,
Summer
